By David Yeagley

I may have been the first American Indian in academia to be shunned for conservative views, but I’m certainly not the last. Associate Professor William Bradford, of Indiana University Law School, is under attack by the most prejudiced, sexist, and hypocritical Leftists to date on any campus.

Bradford (39), a Chiricahua Apache, is a rugged Army Special Operations veteran with a Silver Star.  He served in Desert Storm and in Bosnia.  This record, combined with his illustrious academic qualifications and achievements, seem to make him the dreaded antithesis of everything cherished by anti-war feminists Professors Mary Harter Mitchell and Florence Wagman Roisman, his chief antagonists of the Law School faculty.   They have actively worked against Bradford’s bid for tenure.

William Bradford, half Apache, half Scottish

Indeed, they resent him so intensely they can’t focus an accusation.  They say he is “uncollegial”—an undefined, emotional term, expressing their otherwise unfounded, inarticulate aversions to him. It represents true ideological prejudice, and Roisman is quite unabashed about it.

“Dr. Roisman herself has continuously, and successfully, waged one-woman campaigns on the politically incorrect. Her protests single-handedly got evergreens removed from holiday displays at the law school at Christmas time,” reports Malcom A. Klein, for CampusReportOnline. “I am a person of very progressive politics,” she reported to Ruth Holladay of the Indiana Star. “Everybody there would tell you I am the most to-the-left person (on the faculty).”  Yet she had the self-deluded audacity to tell Scott Jaschik of Inside Higher Ed, “People were surprised that I was hired here and tenured here, but politics are not a criterion for being hired and promoted here.”

Roisman (66) has personally campaigned against Bradford and his politics for some time.   She circulated an AIM petition in support of Ward Churchill, and dramatized the fact that Bradford of course would not sign it.  She also pushed the petition written by Churchill’s wife, Natsu Taylor Saito. Jaschik reports more of Roisman’s studied hypocrisy.  “I find it ironic” Roisman says, “that Professor Bradford is going to the media to complain about his status here and he doesn’t understand why academics supported a tenured professor whose tenure was being threatened,” she says. “The whole point is that people who teach — whether or not they are tenured — should enjoy freedom to express what they believe to be accurate, true or important. I don’t have to agree with Professor Ward Churchill to support him. I support his right to think what he thinks is accurate.” Roisman is an archetype of Leftist academic hypocrisy in action.

Bradford is simply an American Indian patriot.  He wrote a conspicuous defense of an American flag displayed at Indian University Law School after the 9/11 attacks.   The Lefties had the flag taken down, of course, but Bradford was a marked man thereafter.

Roisman on the other hand has actively campaigned against Bush and his judicial nominees. She has written many columns and letters for local newspapers, and even launched an e-mail campaign denouncing Bush’s decisions. The e-mail campaign is essentially illegal for her as a faculty member, but, no university authority has been willing to pursue the matter.   Leftists are always free to do things others can’t.  Why? because they say so.   That’s all.

Bradford is an American Indian achiever, one of some 15 Indian law professors in the United States.  But as a conservative and a patriot, he may never be given tenure. The law students voted him their favorite teacher, but the Leftists disdain him. Merely because he disagrees with the Leftists, they malign him with vaguaries.  “Uncollegial,” they say, as if he’s a Philistine among the orthodox, or a sinner among saints.  It is anathema to be “uncollegial” among collegiates.

Yet, the Leftists are the ones who are precisely uncollegial.  They manifest the pith of bias, and yet, because they accuse someone else of it first, (with their quasi-religious terms—political correctness kicked up a notch), they are supposedly innocent of their own accusation.

One thing for certain:  they cannot abide an American Indian patriot. They cannot tolerate the voice of a conservative Indian.  If they can’t have their liberal, fake Indian, Ward Churchill, they’re not about to concede a real Indian in the ranks of conservatism.

So, after they ousted a Comanche Indian from campus, now they’re going for an Apache.   It is quite the historical anomaly that an Apache and a Comanche would be brought together in a common cause in such circumstances, but historical aversions between the tribes disappear when we’re fighting together for freedom on our American campuses.

The Progressive Faculty and Staff Coalition of IUPUI (Indian University-Purdue University of Indiana) posted a Statement of Support for Roisman and Mitchell, in which their dissembling, self-serving position against Bradford is formally stated.

Note that the statement is issued, not by the university, but by "progressive faculty" and "staff."   They have progressive staff!   Talk about uncollegial, soliciting non-faculty to unite in specifically political positions with politically self-identified faculty!   These people are shameless, and represent the biggest embarrassment to true and honest intellectual pursuit which is supposed to characterize the 'collegial' environment.

Welcome to the American university campus.  "Progressives" (i.e., Leftists, Liberals, anti-American Constitutionalists) don't want to be accused of flouting their political wares, when that's precisely what they flout, and exactly what they are on campus for.

This is outrageous and degrades all of us American patriots, Indian or not.

I am an alumnus of Indian University - Bloomington Campus.  I get solicitations multiple times a year for funds.  I’ve been concerned about the culture on the Bloomington campus for years and simply haven’t responded.  Well now this Alum is going to contact the university administration and let them know why I don’t financially support my alma mater. If Rosiman was hired and promoted in spite of her political leanings as she stated, then William Bradford should be afforded the same consideration.  We need more Conservative faculty leaders at our universities.

BTW, as you may know, the Law School is located at the Bloomington Campus.  So why are “progressive” faculty and staff at UIPUI getting involved?  It’s none of their business.

Many of you have been sharing song lyrics on another thread.  Since I have spent so much time over the past eight years working with children and youth, I listen to a lot of popular Christian music.  This article and several of the other ongoing threads call to mind an old song of the Newsboys that speaks to the subject of expressing our belief in Christ in a politically correct world.  But I believe it also speaks to expressing our Conservative beliefs in the same arena.

What are we sneakin’ around for?
Who are we trying to please?
Shruggin’ off sin, apologizing like we’re spreading some kind of disease.
But I’m saying, “No way!”

It’s time for us to collectively say, “No way.”  We need to server the Leftist socialists notice that we aren’t going to let them get away with their anti-American agenda anymore.

I beg your pardon, troll.   I tell ya, I just can't keep up with everything.  I really appreciate the efforts of BE members.  This is wonderful.  Please don't anyone be miffed when I miss something, even something important like this!

I've talked with Prof. Bradford.  We're going to try to work some things out together.

He is a lot farther down the academic road than I ever was.  He's an associate professor!  He's never made any trouble.  I was only an over-worked adjunct, and I raised the roof!  To make trouble before you make tenure is self-destroying.

But Bradford is ideal, in every way.

The Music school is in Bloomington, too, right?   One of the best graduate schools in the states.

Yes, it is.  When I was at IU in the mid - to late 70's, the IU School of Music was rated #1 in the country.  I believe Juliard was #3 at the time.  I had friends who were grad students at the school who were working on their master's degree in Opera.  I also had a friend who ran the lights for all the productions.  So even if I couldn't afford one of the cheapie student seats, I could sit with her in the light booth.  In many ways the best seat in the house.

It's simple Doc.  Apache Professor Bradford and Comanche Dr. Yeagley have jumped the reservation established for them by the academic Left.

In the 19th century, it was the U.S. cavalry who hunted down Indians that jumped the rez.  Now its the feminists and college faculty who play the role of the cavalry.  They have become what they always profess to hate.

Pity the poor students, to have to come to  campus and see this kind of absolute, desperate nonsense on the part of so-called "adults," whom they are supposed to look up to, to respect, and to emulate.

Well, at least they have Bradford, before there eyes!   The man stands tall.  Very tall.

I imagine he will get full tenure, and then the Lefties will take it to the federal government, somehow.  All Leftist cases are aimed at the direction of the Supreme Court, as we know.

We just can't have patriotism of any kind, in any degree, on a college campus.  It's un-collegial.

Alligator said, "They have become what they always profess to hate".

You are spot on, Alligator. Old line liberal academic types would have been out getting petitions signed to bar the hard right from preventing Professor Bradford gaining his tenure. They have indeed become what they once detested.

This is endemic with the dems. I actually burned my Dem Card and for the first time in this old warriors life, voted Republican in protest at Kerry and his raving lunatics. Things haven't changed much, but Hillary does appear to have seen the light.
