It is an ancient art, persecution. Not that anyone in particular needs lessons in how to persecute, but, historically speaking, we find the very finest motivations for persecution in the way other people have treated the Jews. It’s a matter of cause, not technique.
Michael Grant’s The Jews in the Roman World (Dorset, 1973), though a classic work of confusion wherein opinion is ensconced with history, and interpretation entwined with documented history, does make one thing clear–the Jews have remarkable influence in the societies in which they dwell. It is generally unwanted, or regarded as inimical by those in power. The Gentile authorities consider the Jews a perpetual competitor, not an ally.
Lucius Annaeus Seneca (ca. 3 BCE-65 AD), the great Roman stoic philosopher, teacher, writer, and politician, made his opinion of the Jews known to his intellectual apprentice, Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, better known as Nero Claudius Caesar (AD 37-68) , which Grant notes in detail, from the Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium, 95, 4-7:
The smoking lamps on the Sabbath, and the wastefulness of this institution in losing one seventh of man’s labour, caused Seneca great annoyance, and he complained that “the customs of that most criminal nation have gained such strength that they have now been received in all lands: the conquered have given laws to the conquerors.”
Sound like a familiar circumstance?
And so it was, Nero was surrounded with visceral anti-Semites. Interestingly, his second wife Poppaea (whom he married in 62), is said by Josephus to have been God-fearing (Antiquitatus Judaicae, XX, 195). Furthermore, she more than once influenced him favorably toward the Jews.
There was a Jewish actor, one Aliturus, evidently played a “rôle” in curbing at least some of the mania against the Jews. Aliturus had introduced Josephus to Poppaea, in fact. That was the connection. So, clearly, actors have had a long tradition of political opinion and active involvement in society. Aliturus is some prototype of the Hollwood activist, no? He was in on the Roman act, as it were. Right at a time of intense uncertainty of Jewish status. Grant says that Poppaea was the sponsor of the young Josephus when he came to Rome.
Nero, from the Roman National Museum.
Alas, Nero, as most other Romans, considered the Jews a foreign pest, always demanding rights, privileges, special considerations, etc. (Even Edgar Allan Poe wrote a short story aggrandizing the stereotype of the demanding Jew, “A Tale of Jerusalem,” published the year after his death, 1850). Separatists they were, preoccupied with preserving their religion, language, culture, and race. Apparently their persecutors never anticipated the effects of scattering the Jews from Palestine. Ol’ Sargon II, the Assyrian, started a dreadful trend in the world, a way back in 722 BC, or was that Tiglath-Pileser in 733? See, J. Maxwell Miller, Israelite and Judean History (Fortress, 1977), pp. 432, 433. All they did was to cause little ‘satellite’ Jerusalems to be set up all over the world–wherever the Jews would find a place to settle.
So, real persecution has to be based on an indelible separatism and cultural preservation–especially when the subject is based on a die-hard insistence on pristine balkanism. Obviously, a society like that in America is the target of all such separatism. The impossible task of honoring multiculturalism and yet preserving anything American is a perfect storm for social frustration. An alien, African Negro Communist president over a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant society we can blame entirely on the Jews, and the whole principle of not surrendering your identity, no matter where you are or what position you are in socially.
So, don’t hate Obama. Hate the Jews. That’s the sensible thing to do. Those pestilential Jewish morals and social values are simply the ruination of every country in which the Jews introduce them.
Admittedly, such sarcasm as presented in this article cannot be sustained without great risk of being misunderstood. I would say that the point is to distinguish between the believer in God, and the non-believer, I say, the believer in the Bible, and the non-believer. The Bible says God has a profound purpose in the presence of the Jews in the world, then and now, in Israel and outside Israel. That is something to simply leave alone, to stand back from, with hands off. The mysteries of God cannot be penatrated. Yet, for this very reason, the Jews have always been persecuted. They have been persecuted because they are separated. They have developed survival techniques in the secular world, in the land of the goyim. These techniques may not have had such a spectacular effect on other countries, historically, as they have had on the United States. The principle of human rights, as applied racially, and religiously, has obscured the meaning of nationhood in American society, indeed. The idea of cherishing the minority–to the expense and demise of the majority, has been a most poisonous prospect as manifested in American law and politics.
But the principles of Jewish presence in the world are not weakened or abeyant. Barbare Lerner Spectre, Founding Director of Paideia, The European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden, has made some recent statements about the Jewish tactic of multiculturalism.
For this cause, she has received some rather seedy, rank opprobrium, and one such source of disapproval even includes me as a collateral target (see lengthy”comments” beginning here). I find this interesting. This less than rational site, “What Do You Believe?, hosted by the less that forthright “Brian Akira” (pseudonym) finds the Jews to be the source of all evil in the world. This is, of course, the inevitable conclusions of the weak, frustrated masses who just can’t seem to do away with the Jews, despite the disproportionately small number of Jews in the world.
With the exception of Adolf Ahmadinejad, most anti-Semitic sites stop short of calling for the extermination of the Jews, and instead writhe in endless lamentation, condemnation, execration, and a kind of psychological defecation. They achieve some satisfaction in cursing the Jews, but, they seem impotent when it comes to expression their idea of a solution. I have called for them to state their solution, publicly, more than once. They immediately retire to an oblivious silence.
I don’t think the white race is a genocidal race. They don’t don’t do that. Not really. They have a soul. I am amazed at how true this really is. They did not eliminate American Indians. They will not even call for the elimination of Jewish people. They are content, as it were, to condemn what they feel is wrong with the Jews. But, they don’t work to even exclude Jews anymore. They are willing to hate the Jewish influence, and maybe even hate some Jews. But, they don’t even persecute them effectually. Maybe the whites race did learn some lessons from history about persecution.
Nero was willing to persecute Christians, but, that’s because most of them were Jewish in the first century AD. Jews had been kicked out of Rome before, by Claudius, around 49 AD, but later all their rights were restored. Nero, always willing to excel in outrage, actually put many Jews (Christians) to death in 64 AD, for public entertainment (according to the young Tacitus).
So, blame it all on the ancient Assyrians, to the north of Israel. They were the ones who first expelled the Jews from their homeland. Now the world can’t get rid fo them, or their profound influence on government, law, and society. How’s that for unintended consequences?
To the Jews, I say, beware of that “minority rights” bit. I think it may backfire on you. That’s an unintended consequence, too.
